What is RISE? Opstad PTA’s RISE program offers fun, educational after-school classes for students of Opstad. Each class is 1 hour per week for 6 weeks running  February 23 – April 1.  Classes will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 PM, on Tuesday OR Thursday after school. Costs and grade levels are listed with the class descriptions.

To enroll your child, review the class options on the attached page. Enrollment in more than one class will be allowed as space permits.  Register online at the RISE link on opstadpta.org (if unable to register online, you may register using the gray box on the payment form on the back of this page). Registration will be completed by first-come, first-served, so we encourage you to return registration materials quickly. Parents will receive confirmation of registration by February 19, 2010

PAYMENT: Please return the form on the back with with payment for the total tuition amount. Make checks payable to Opstad PTA and return in an envelope marked “RISE” to your child’s teacher or drop off at Opstad’s office by February 5, 2010. Registration fees will be deposited the first week of class.  Some partial scholarships are available. If you would like more information about scholarships, please contact Opstad's counselor, Steve Bates at 831-8319.

What happens on class days? NEW PROCESS: Students can go directly to their RISE class, and there will be a parent volunteer in the school lobby to help. Attendance will be taken by the instructor and collected by the volunteer. Every effort will be made to contact parents regarding students missing from class.  If your student will not be attending a RISE class for which they are enrolled, please notify the school at 831-8300. Snacks may be offered in some classes.  Please indicate on the registration form if your child has any food allergies or other health concerns. 

After class, students will go to the school lobby.  Parents should indicate on the registration form how their children will be getting home (parents will pick up, children will go into Y-care for pick up later, or children will walk home). ****Bus service WILL NOT be available after RISE classes.****

Some classes may need an in-class parent volunteer

You may receive a 50% discount for your child if you are selected as a helper. Please indicate on the registration if you would like to be considered. The time required is about 1.5 hours per week.

2010 RISE Classes

List A: TUESDAY classes

 

-1A- Knitting   (grades 3-5)                           $30  (class size 5-10)

Instructor: Joelle Treharne                                        

Learn to knit, beginning through advanced levels. Learn to cast on, knit, and bind off. May learn purling and other techniques if time allows.

Students should bring 1 pair size 8-10US knitting sticks, and 1 ball of yarn (worsted weight).

 

-2A-Jump Rope   (grades K-4)                              $20

Instructor:  David Spring, M. Ed., and cert. teacher  

We will practice jump rope tricks using both a single length and double length ropes.

-3A-Let’s Play Math!   (grades K-5)               $35

Instructor:  Kristy Graham, cert. teacher                                                        

Do you love to play games?  Want to practice all those skills you've been learning in class?  Come join us for a fun, interactive, and great time playing with math! This class will focus on 5 main math games working to enhance your child's math facts, number sense, and basic grade level skills (ie: some games can be modified for advancing levels and/or an older version is available).  The first 30 min. students will focus on the "Game of the day", we will rotate teams and students will be able to play the main game again or choose to play another educational game for the second half.  Our last class will be a review and opportunity for the students to chose and play their favorite(s)! Come practice your math... and join in the FUN!

-4A- Sign-Language (grades K- 5)                              $40     

Instructor:  Nina Hawley                                                                                  

Come learn American Sign Language!  This class is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn about Deaf Culture and American Sign Language through crafts, songs and games. Materials included.

-5A- Literacy Through Photography  (grades 3-5)       $45 (class size min 5, max 15)

Instructor:  Mary Miller, professional photographer

The very basics of photography will be discussed; we will have fun learning about composition, holding a camera, body positioning, the effects of light, how we look at the world, point of view, etc. We will use the theme of "Community", in which the children will see life around them from their unique perspective, choosing one image (8x10) to write about. In week 1 they will be given the project of "My Community"; weeks 2 and 3 they will come back with their images, making a choice by the end of class in week 3. By week 4, I will have images for each child printed. Week 5, we will be working on "What the image means to them, or how it affects them, or a related story attached to the image". Week 6, we will share what we have learned with each other in class and have more of an open discussion.  Their prints and "story" will go home with each child.

List B: THURSDAY classes

 

-1B-Mad Science     (grades K-5)                         $70 (class size minimum 15)

Instructor: Mad Science Team

Science In Action Children will experiment with kinetic energy, use science to uncover art forgeries, conduct cool chemical reactions, discover what life is like underwater as we discuss buoyancy and adaptation, go "wild" studying zoology, and much much more. Every class also builds awesome take-homes to share the Mad Science experience with family and friends!  Your child will have so much fun it is hard to believe that they are actually learning at the same time.

 

-2B-Yoga for Kids   (grades K-5)              $50

Instructor:  Carla Orellana

Yoga helps children develop healthy, flexible, strong bodies and clear, focused minds.  We use physical poses, breathing techniques and relaxation to promote self-confidence, compassion for others and discipline to be successful in tests, sports and life in general.  Carla Orellana has been teaching yoga to children of all ages for the last 30 years and is a certified yoga practitioner. Classes will cover: Deep breathing techniques to improve concentration and health; asana (poses) for strength, flexibility and balance; creative visualization techniques; sound vibrations to bring awareness and to develop the ear; deep relaxation to reduce stress and enjoy life; and Yoga Principles such as "ahimsa"/non-violence, cleanliness, and honesty.

Students should bring to class: a mat, a blanket, and wear appropriate exercise clothing.

 

-3B-Soccer   (grades 3-5)                        $30

Instructor:  David Spring, M.Ed.

We will spend about 40 minutes working on drills including dribbling, passing, teamwork, defense and offense. We will spend the final 20 minutes playing a “fun” game. Class will meet in gym, and go outside if weather is good.

 Parent helper wanted, child receives 50% class discount.

Students should wear tennis shoes and shin guards.

 

 

-4B-Crafts  (grades 3-5)                                 $20 (class min 5, max 10)

Instructor:  JoAnna BlomQuist, Online Boutique Owner

Crafting fun! This class will entail making custom birthday cards with the cricket machine, accordion photo albums, decoupage pencil containers, and much more. You will also learn to make ribbon covered hair pretties. Cost includes materials. Instructor has over 25 yrs of experience in sewing, scrap booking and crafts.

 

-5B-Space Art  (grades 3-5)                    $45 (class size max 15)

Instructor:  Jeff Sturgeon, Artist/Illustrator

Learn to paint planets, moons, and galaxies with award winning artist/illustrator Jeff Sturgeon. Jeff will show some of the basics of painting astronomical art. Jeff will also give a demonstration on painting with acrylics on canvas and his signature metal art. Each student will also be given a signed Artist proof print from one of Jeff’s paintings. Supplies are included in the fee.

 

NOTE: Opstad PTA also offers the following enrichment classes with sessions year round:

  • Guitar with Bill Bliven, Wed. 3:30-4:15, next 6-week session starts Mar. 3
  • Spanish with Xiomara Pilon, M/W or T/Th 8:00-8:50 depending on level,
     next session starts Apr. 13
