How big is a Hormone? The Art and Science of
Parenting, Feb. 8
Coming This MONDAY, Excellent Parenting Lecture: CVES PTSA, in
partnership with PTSA's throughout the valley, invite you to a series of
parenting lectures with Julie Giesy Metzger, RN, MN. This event is free
and open to the community.
- Session 1: How Big is a Hormone? The Art and Science of Parenting an Adolescent, Monday, Feb. 8th from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Mt. Si High School Auditorium. (Most applicable for parents of 3rd-8th grade, but all are welcome
- Session 2: The Young and the Restless: The Social Lives of our Children, Thursday, March 18th from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Cascade View Elem. MP room. (most applicable for parents of K-8th grade)

RISE after school enrichment registration begins Jan. 28!
The PTA runs the RISE ("Realizing Innovative Student
Enrichment") after-school program for 6 weeks between Feb. 23 and Apr.
1. (Enrichment classes in Spanish and Guitar run all year long). This
year we will offer the following exploratory classes:
- Mad Science
- Yoga for Kids
- Knitting
- Art: Land and Space
- Sign Language
- Jump Rope
- Soccer
- Playing with Math
- Crafts
- Photography

Book Fair is Jan 25-28
Every class visits the book fair in the library at some time during the
week, and there are additional times too. The book fair proceeds provide
much needed book funds for the library, be sure to join us for the fun!Book Fair hours: M-W 9:00 AM - 3:45 PM Thursday includes FAMILY NIGHT, open 9:00 AM - 7:30 PM.

Green Team recycling at lunch is a big hit!
Just ask your student how its going. By recycling milk cartons and
other lunch recyclables, they have put a big dent in the lunch garbage
volume! Congratulations to the kids for participating, and thank you to
Jeanne A. and Sandy H. for getting this going.

Winter Session for Spanish and Guitar classes offered at Opstad:
Before school Spanish class: This year there will be before school Spanish classes offered at both the beginning and advanced level with Ms. Pilon. Please click here for information anf registration.
Spanish I – Tuesday/Thursday - Classes
will be held from 8:00 to 8:50 a.m. and they start Tuesday, January 12.
Spanish II – Monday/Wed - Classes will be held from 8:00
to 8:50 a.m. and they start Monday, January 11.
After school Guitar class: New this year is a 6-week after school guitar class with Mr. Bliven. Please click here for the registration form, or go to Mr. Bliven's website for more information. Classes begin Jan. 13.

Ski Club is happening again this year! Deadline to
sign up is Dec. 8
The ski club is open to 3rd-5th graders, and their middle school siblings. Please click here for details. The bus will leave from Opstad on 6 Friday afternoons, and the price will include lessons for 3rd-5th graders. Older siblings may sign up for lessons or transportation-only.
Key points:

Transportation and lessons for 6 weeks is $273. Siblings beyond 5th grade are welcome to ride the bus at a cost of $183 for 6 weeks for transportation or also include the lessons for the same Opstad price of $273.

The cost does not include rental equipment or lift ticket.

The bus will leave Opstad Elementary parking lot at 1:50 pm and return approximately 8:30 pm, with the lesson running from 3:30-5:00.

The program will run for 6 Fridays beginning in January

Walk-A-Thon Outcome:
Despite the difficult economic conditions, we want to thank Opstad
families for donating and supporting the many programs that the PTA
funds. We did not reach our goal or budgeted income for Walk-A-Thon, but
thanks to reserves in the budget and our conservative budget
planning last spring we will not have to cancel programs already planned
for this year.
Walk-A-Thon
results:
Totals: $43,491 pledged + $3350 pledged Matching funds = $46,841
Classroom
awards:
Snack party (up to $1500): Groscost PM, Reorda, Acton
Ice Cream party ($1500-$2000): Coburn, Groscost AM, Bishop, Engdahl, Cloud, O'Leary
Snack and Ice Cream party ($2000-$2500): Meyer, Bradburn, Goforth, Eddy, McHenry
Pizza and Ice Cream party ($2500 - $3000): Pastrana, Williams, Haggerty, Piper, Brun
Pizza and Ice Cream party and 1 hour extra recess (>$3000): Miller
Individual winners were awarded at the Nov. 5 assembly,
thank you for your hard work!
